INTRODUCTION
The study of Design and Technology at Royal Russell School allows pupils to explore the world of industrial design through a myriad of focussed practical tasks and project work. The emphasis is on creativity, originality and, above all, learning through experience. At KS3 pupils design and build their own projects in a wide range of materials. Design presentation is taught as a means of communicating ideas. Pupils are given an understanding of how professional designers work and try to emulate this throughout their own project work. They generate design folios that support their practical work and build a solid foundation for the progress to GCSE and A Level.

Design & Technology

KEY POINTS

  • Enthusiastic and committed teaching staff
  • Well equipped multi-media workshop
  • After school workshop every day for exam groups
  • 100% grade A - C pass rate at GCSE in 2007 - 42% at A grade
  • 100% grade A - B pass rate at A Level in 2007

SPECIAL FEATURES

At both GCSE and A Level pupils are given the opportunity to undertake a major design project of their own choice. They must identify a problem and, over two years, research and analyse the problem, develop a working solution and then, finally, manufacture a fully working prototype for testing. These projects are the most challenging pieces of work the pupils will undertake during their time at school and the sense of achievement and rewards can be considerable.

Possible areas for further study include:

3D Design / Product Design
Graphic Design
Architecture
Mechanical Engineering
Production Engineering
