INTRODUCTION
The course aims to teach students
- to enjoy reading widely, independently and critically
- to understand how texts are constructed and their effects on readers
- to assess evidence and make confident judgements
- to express opinions and construct arguments in clear and dynamic English.
English Literature is an A level subject that is accessible from a wide range of approaches and may be combined with all other subjects. It is a key subject for students working in the Arts disciplines but also complements Science and Technology students as evidence of a wider range of interest and ability.
Entry requirements
Grade B passes in English and English Literature are required as a minimum although most students have passes at A* - B in both subjects. An interest in reading and literature is necessary.
Content and assessment
This is an exciting and new course that maximises student and teacher choice of text. At AS, choices for class study will be made from the following themes: World War 1 Literature - The Victorians - Modern Literature - Exploring Issues of Identity.
Students will study poetry, drama and prose from one of these modules, making connections about meaning, attitudes, style and form. There is a lot of wider reading and individual choice of texts that will be studied.

Looking further ahead
An Advanced level award in English Literature is a solid, academic qualification which will access undergraduate courses in any discipline. To a potential employer, it is a good indication of powers of expression, the ability to make reasoned judgements and an awareness of human experience. |
