English Literature

OCR: AS AND A2 ENGLISH LITERATURE

he course aims to teach students:
to read widely, independently and critically,
to gain an insight into the traditions of English Literature,
to assess evidence and make mature judgements,
to articulate an argument in clear, precise English.

English Literature is a useful AS or A Level subject which may be combined with a variety of other disciplines. Students on the Arts side might well take English with such subjects as History, Modern Languages, Drama, Economics, Politics, Media Studies or Art. Able Maths or Science students with an interest in reading would also be welcome.

Entry Requirements

Grade C passes in English and English Literature are required as a minimum, but in practice most students have A*, A or B grades in both subjects.

Looking Further Ahead

An Advanced Level in English Literature is a solid academic qualification which will be useful for students applying to read arts subjects, journalism, law or multi-disciplinary degree courses. To a potential employer it is a good indication of powers of expression and the ability to make reasoned judgements.
