Entry Requirements
It is an advantage to have studied GCSE Food Technology or Home Economics. This subject combines well with Chemistry and / or Biology
Content
AS Sections 1,2 and 3. A2 Sections 4,5 & 6
Section 1 & 4: Materials and Components
Understanding of food science and properties of the main food components - proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals & additives.
Section 2 & 5: Design and Market Influences
The development and analysis of food products with reference to socio-economic, environmental and technological factors. Trends in new product development.
Section 3 & 6: Process and Manufacture
Knowledge of the manufacturing systems used to produce a variety of food products for the retail and catering market.
Assessment
AS:
Coursework (40% of the total AS marks, 20% of total A level marks)
2 x 1½ hour written examinations (60% of total AS marks, 30% of A level marks)
A2:
A project (15% of total A2 marks)
Product study (15% of total A2 marks)
3 hour written examination (20% of total A2 marks)
Looking Further Ahead
There are many openings to someone with a Food Technology background, ranging from careers in the food industry to the fields of medicine and education. The job opportunities are endless and include: biotechnologist, chef, dietician, environmental health officer, food chemist, food consultant, food designer, food journalist, food manufacturer, food marketing and advertising, food styling and photography, hotel management, quality assurance, recipe development, research, retailing, teaching, radio and television – to name but a few! Food technologists are in huge demand and there are three well paid job opportunities for every student leaving university with a Food Technology degree.
