WJEC: MEDIA STUDIES
INTRODUCTION
Media Studies is a dynamic and exciting subject reflecting the roles TV, newspapers, films, radio, new media and the music industry play in society. Students analyse media products, discuss issues of representation and evaluate the impact of the media on audiences. They then produce their own print and moving image texts.
Entry Requirements
Enthusiasm for the subject and an interest in a broad range of media is essential. Essaywriting and ICT skills are an advantage.
Highlights
Outstanding results – Two thirds A&B grades and 100% C or above for the last 3 years. Access to and training in how to use industry-standard technology and software. Opportunity to develop knowledge and analytical abilities along with practical and creative skills.
Content
Media Representations and Responses – students analyse media texts in relation to visual language, sound, narrative structure and genre. They discuss issues of representation and evaluate the relationship between audiences and the media.
Media Production Processes – students produce their own media texts demonstrating their understanding of media representations and responses, as well as their technical and creative skills.
The A2 is similar but includes individual research and industry issues.
Looking Further Ahead
In the last few years students have progressed to a range of courses at Universities such as Warwick, Bristol and Leeds. Further still, there exists a huge array of opportunities in the creative industries for highly-motivated and skilled graduates.
