Media Studies

WJEC: MEDIA STUDIES

Media Studies is a popular and well-established subject which offers a broad range of opportunities both for Higher Education and future careers. With the explosion of new media technologies and rapidly changing industries, Media Studies is a dynamic and fast-moving field of study. As such Media students need to be independent and enthusiastic.

Course Content

In the first year, two modules are assessed by written examinations designed to test analytical skills and understanding of theory. The coursework module is creative and demands students research, plan and produce media texts of their own. Students use digital technology to produce a range of different texts such as magazines, advertising campaigns and CD covers.

Looking Further Ahead

Media Studies works well in combination with IT, English, Business Studies, Art, Drama and Politics.
Potential careers exist in Television, Journalism, New Media, Graphic Design, Marketing and Photography. As Media Studies is an analytical subject, which teaches research and communication skills, it provides a good basis for Higher Education and future employment.
This is an interesting and wide ranging academic subject which, although hard work, can be great fun. It is also attractive for those who enjoy the practical element of studying and is one of the most popular A Level choices.
