INTRODUCTION

Entry Requirements
GCSE Music Grade B or above OR The ability to read music fluently and the ability to play an instrument to Grade 5 standard by the time of the examination. A good standard of English is required.
Content
AS: Three units each worth 33.3% of total AS mark, 16.7% of total A level mark.
Unit G351 - Performing
Present a varied solo performance lasting 8 minutes, then discuss your performance.
Unit G352 - Coursework
Composing 1A - Present portfolio of written harmony in many different styles
Composing B - Compose for 4 to 10 instruments or an arrangement of a song.
Unit G353 - Introduction to Historical Study with examination
A detailed study of a work by Bach, Mozart and Schubert as well as Jazz by Jelly Roll Morton, Count Basie and Miles Davies.
A2: Three units each worth 16.7% of total A2 mark
Unit G354 - Performing Interpretation
Fifteen minute performance and Viva Voce
Unit G355 - Coursework
Composing 2 - Harmonise Chorales in the style of J S Bach and a vocal composition
Unit G356 - Historical and Analytical Studies with examination
Either Music for the Stage: Purcell / Wagner / Bernstein or Popular Music: Beatles / Queen / Norah Jones
Looking Further Ahead
In the past 3 years, students have been accepted to study Music and Music Therapy at University. Music A Level also shows you have a broad base of interest and knowledge in combination with the other A Levels selected and is looked on favourably by universities during their selection process.
Music A Level leads to work as a professional musician, teacher, journalist, work in the Civil Service, sound recording engineer and producer for record companies and the BBC. |
