OCR: A LEVEL MUSIC

Our aim is to provide opportunities for candidates to develop a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in music, embracing creative, interpretative, historical and analytical aspects of the subject.
To do this we provide a context for personal growth through the diversity of serious study in music, and thereby promote academic independence and self discipline, broaden intellectual and emotional responses, stimulate critical discrimination and heighten social and cultural awareness.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Music Grade C or above OR
The ability to read music fluently and the ability to play an instrument to Grade 5 standard by the time of the examination (if choosing RECITAL option). A good standard of English is required.

Content

AS Performing 10–15 mins
Present a varied programme on your instrument

AS Composing 1A Coursework
Present folio of stylistic harmony

Composing B
Compose for 4 to 10 instruments or an arrangement of a song.

AS Introduction to Historical Study 2 hours
A detailed study of a work by Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert as well as Jazz by Miles Davies, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong

Upper Sixth

A2 Performing Interpretation 15 mins +Coursework

A2 Composing 2 (Storyboard) Coursework

A2 Historical and Analytical studies 2.5 hours

Looking Further Ahead

In the past 3 years, students have been accepted to study Music and Music Therapy at University. Music A Level also shows you have a broad base of interest and knowledge in combination with the other A Levels selected and is looked on favourably by universities during their selection process.
Music A Level leads to work as a professional musician, teacher, journalist, work in the Civil Service, sound recording engineer and producer for record companies and the BBC.
