My Russell Hill Days
My Russell Hill schooldays were eventful – never dull. I began them in 1937, as a seven year old, at Hope Morley House. I remember being particularly enthralled with Hope Morley's wonderful day room, with its large rocking horse and dolls house. Classes were small and our education formal, but we also found time to acquire such practical skills as knitting. Miss Bird was head teacher of the kindergarten and she ensured our early school life was both enjoyable and calm. It was a pleasant introduction to what was to be a long association with the school. O.R. Raises Funds for Cancer

A Note from Pene. Well I have done the deed the tears welled up as my hair was being cut. Jess was with me and said she thought it looked better than she expected (thank goodness for loving daughters). David likes it and Nick is calling me Yummy Mummy so can't be all bad. Colleagues look at me blankly with a polite smile until they realise thinking I am a new person in the office! I take a double look when I pass by a mirror...not as grey as I thought I would be, all very liberating no hair brushes/dryers needed! But it wasn't about me, the great thing is over $4,000 raised with website donations plus cash that went straight to Cancer Council ACT and many donations made in UK to local cancer charities. Check out the website still taking donations....

This year more than any other has highlighted to me how precious life is and is to be lived to the full. I have witnessed 6 friends this year alone who are battling cancer in one form or another. As a friend I feel so helpless other than just being there if needed. In particular my dear friend, Chris has gone through radical surgery and had both breasts removed, subjected to gruelling course of chemo and about to start a long haul of radiation. I told her at the beginning of her treatment before she lost her hair, I would wear hats/scarfs with her when we go out and also if we could raise enough money I would have my hair shaved off! Well I am now putting it into action and am prepared to go through with losing my hair in the hope I can raise as much money for charity as possible.
It has taken quite a bit of thought to do this, but I think it is a positive thing to do....Sometimes I think I must be mad, not really like me at all to do this sort of thing, but I feel strongly in wanting to do something. Chris's courage and optimism blows me away. She is a very special lady and I was feeling so helpless as to what to do, apart from just being there. Her trial and Nick our best man, and also an OR in
I have been amazed at peoples generosity. A colleague of mine also a cancer survivor told me not to underestimate the value of a female cutting/shaving her hair when I was planning this and what sort of fundraising target to set. The website is an excellent medium to get it out there and we have had a great response! With Jess' classes fundraising, students at my college having a sausage sizzle BBQ and the ladies at the golf club are holding a bash in October to support 'me', and the cash donations just handed to me, goodness knows what the final figure will be! I am cutting my hair next week, quietly, some people have a huge event I am told and that can raise more, but I think for me I need to just do it without fanfare....this is such a 'NOT PENE' thing to do. But good for the soul, I am sure, as I am quite vain about my hair, I am thinking it could be liberating! Sooner I do it sooner it grows back.
I am touched by everyones support, kindness and generousity, I will put photos up on the website when the deed is done. You can visit my fundraising page by clicking on the button below:

Tony writes "On Tuesday David Browning and I had the first of our meetings. It was
great fun, and David even wore his school tie. David has a good archive of material, including Russellian magazines and a host of newspaper cuttings relating to the school, which we have yet to look through."
