RRS RIVERSIDE REUNION – JUNE 2008 Past pupils and members of staff gathered on a chilly summer evening to reminisce about school as it was 6+ years ago, at the Old Thameside Inn on Bankside. It was wonderful to see how well so many ex pupils are doing, most of them were unrecognisable now even from that short time ago when they left school. Well done all of you and do keep in contact with your old school.
Current Year 6 pupils were fortunate to be given a talk by O.R. Brian Angel who was at the school during World War II.
RETIREMENT PARTY FOR CHRIS HEDGES Many ex staff and current senior and prep school staff joined Chris and Hazel Hedges for a party to celebrate 21 years at the school and Chris’s retirement as Prep School Headmaster. Many of you who were in the Prep School will recognize some of the people in the photos below:
The Gerald Hood event was again very moving. Warm evening sun in the woods, Elgar from the town band, flags raised and lowered, poems from a small girl and a wonderful display of wreaths and individual flowers (from young tots to old totterers!), periods of silence being broken only by shrill birdsong from the surrounding trees. The Dutch are all so proud of the interest from Royal Russell and kept asking about the School and everyone they met at RRS in May 2007. It would be good if we can keep some representation each year – if not always from the O.R.s, maybe teaching staff, present-day pupils and/or parents, etc. Only 2 hours by comfortable train from Amsterdam – and loads of Dutch hospitality awaiting!
The first opera of any kind in the history of Royal Russell was ‘HMS Pinafore’, performed here in March 1939, almost seventy years ago. Roger Billington (1931-1941) played the part of Josephine, and we were delighted to welcome him and his wife, Phyl, back to this year’s performance.
O.R. F O O T B A L L T O U R N A M E N T The weather just about held for us at this year’s Footie Tournament, organised again by Steve Greaves (Oxford Housemaster). There were many ex pupils and staff here to support and have a chat during quiet moments. Not that there were many quiet moments – especially during the penalty shoot out! This year’s winners were Adam Cannon’s team who left around 1998/99/2000. As well as a team of current pupils, there were 5 Old Boys’ teams in this year's tournament, organised by the following: Thanks to all the organizers! Looking forward already to 2009. Form Object
KEITH ANGEL Celebrating his 80th Birthday, Keith Angel (1936-1944) invited eighty guests to party with him at Brighton Racecourse, just a few ‘lengths’ from his Woodingdean home. With no actual racing that day, horses had been confined to stable and Old Russellians among the partygoers were able to concentrate on some lavish catering, inter-table games which got jollier and louder as time went on, then family movies and something of Keith’s fifty years of Committee work with the OR’s. Highlight was the presentation to him of framed pictures of Russell Hill School and Royal Russell by Chairman Karl Yabsley on behalf of the Committee. Keith was bedecked for the occasion not just with a favourite yellow rose from his (and green-fingered Rosemary’s) garden but with badges of the School, the Rotary Club and also Skal, the travel agents’ association, all of which have benefited from his committee work and enthusiasm for over half a century and each of which were represented among the guests. Spanning OR years in the group photo were (left to right) : Brian Angel, Karl Yabsley, Rosemary Dennis (Mrs Angel), John Harrison, Peter Harrison, Derek Green, Keith, Bill Cave, Chris Gough, Pamela Barrable (Mrs Turtle), John Dennis (Rosemary’s brother), Jane Turtle (Mrs Avent) and Colin Barrable. (Jane is Pam’s daughter and Colin is Pam’s brother). Pam had been one of Rosemary’s bridesmaids … a dazzling performance in the film of Keith and Rosemary’s wedding, which we then enjoyed. All-in-all, a really great occasion, not just for Keith and Rosemary but for every one of those there.
. M O S E LE Y S . C E L E B R A T E . Graham and Judy Moseley celebrated 25 years of marriage this summer, and also both of their 50th birthdays. Many friends and relatives gathered in Great Hall for a wonderful musical evening, starting with a Barn Dance, followed by buffet with the Moseley Family ‘Von Trapp’ each doing a turn, and the pièce de resistance was Judy singing in the band with O.R. Sarah North née West (1967-1977). As you can see from the photos, there were many ex staff there helping with the celebrations!
. A N N U A L. D I N N E R .2 0 0 7 It was decided to hold this event on the last Saturday in November this year, in the hope that we could encourage more of you to attend. We certainly saw some different faces and most of those who attended preferred Saturday. However, this will form the basis of a discussion at the January committee meeting. If anyone has any helpful ideas for next year, we will be grateful, and they will be considered at this meeting. We raised our glasses, as is the custom, in fellowship at 9pm. Did you remember? The AGM preceded the Dinner and the Minutes for this are downloadable from the Meetings link.
O N E . Y E A R. .O N (2 0 0 7 ) Recent leavers came back to school in September to meet up with their old friends and some staff, who taught them. Although this is now an annual event on the first Friday of the Autumn Term, next year will be modified in terms of venue, to try to encourage more people to attend.
T E D D Y B E A R S P I C N I C Many Prep School pupils accompanied their parents and grandparents, some of whom are Old Russellians, to this brand new event held in a marquee on the Chapel Quad on 1st July 2007. All families were given the opportunity to adopt a Russell Bear, to enjoy a barbecue followed by the ever-popular chocolate fountain, and to partake in the many activities on offer.
R O Y A L R U S S E L L R I V E R S I D E Every picture tells a story ………….. Below are a few pictures that tell the story of Friday 15th June 2007, when a large number of ex Royal Russell pupils gradually took over The Anchor Pub on the River Thames. The evening started quietly with small groups gingerly appearing from around corners and from the local restaurants. One group, from 1956, hadn’t all been together for 50 years! As the sun set over the river, the resounding laughter could probably be heard all across London. The groups grew and grew, and by the time some of us had missed the last train to Croydon, we finished up inside the pub. Everywhere you looked you saw faces you knew, some recognisable, some not at all, but all friendly faces of people you were about to get to know better, and all from Royal Russell School! Thanks to all those who came along and made it such a fun evening and to Jane Bruce for all your messages on Facebook – don’t forget the Masked Summer Ball. Details in the Events Calendar.
