BECOME PART OF THE HISTORY OF RRS

There is an opportunity to become part of the history of the school by sponsoring a new table in our brand new building. For more information, please contact Sue Tanner who will be happy to send you the paperwork for this, or click here to open the flier.

The old dining room tables gave us good service having been purchased in 1926, and we have replaced them with others in keeping with the Sir Aston Webb architecture. We have chosen tables and benches made from solid oak and we believe they will serve many generations to come. We are offering you the opportunity to sponsor a plaque on the table, celebrating the time you spent at Royal Russell, at a suggested contribution of £50. It is also possible to sponsor a whole table and have a specially designed plaque for a suggested contribution of £500.

A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED IN MARCH 2009

ROYAL RUSSELL SCHOOL   1980 – 1996
From Court-Martial to Peerage’
by
Ronald Balaam

Shirley and I spent twenty years at Lancing College including ten years in charge of a boarding house of some seventy boys.   In 1980 I applied for and was appointed to the Headship of the Royal Russell School.   This proved to be a more demanding assignment than I had anticipated and the sixteen years that we spent there were not without their tricky moments.   The decision to write a book was only taken ten years into retirement when I came to the conclusion that there was a story worth telling, for my own benefit certainly and perhaps for the enlightenment of others involved at the time.

Ian Beer, former Head Master of Ellesmere College, Lancing College and Harrow School, kindly agreed to write a foreword and says: ‘It is a precautionary tale that should be read by any interested in education’.

For anyone interested  -  an advertising flyer including order form may be downloaded here

 Ron Balaam

John Piggin - long-serving and highly esteemed member of the teaching staff - who was a stalwart colleague during this period and who is still energetically in post comments:

‘This is a fascinating insight into the joys and pitfalls of being Headmaster of a school and succeeding when things don’t always go according to plan!   Ron was a remarkable Headmaster of the Royal Russell School, and no matter whether you knew him or not his book will provide an intimate understanding of what it took to be its Headmaster in the 1980s’

WEBSITE FOR O.R. GERALD HOOD (1930-1938)

Alan J Barrow, the 100 Squadron guest who laid a small wreath at Gerald Hood’s ceremony in May 2007, was the person who first stumbled onto Hood’s gravestone and started making enquiries on the web. The result of his enlarged website about Hood and his fellow-crew members is amazing in its detail. The website he has developed is : www.lancaster-lm658.co.uk

NON SUBSCRIBING MEMBERSHIP - Message from The Chairman

It is with great pleasure that I announce that, at the January 2009 meeting of the committee for The Old Russellians, a decision was made that from September 2009 the annual subscription for membership will cease to exist. All current members will, therefore, now automatically be considered Life Members of The Old Russellians, and enjoy all the privileges of membership. As pupils leave the School they will now be invited to pay a one-off fee to become life members of the Association.

All members will now receive electronic newsletters and invitations to Society events. These will be sent directly to members who keep the Society informed of their e-mail address, or can be downloaded from the Old Russellian website.

Subscriptions received by standing order after September 2009 will be gratefully accepted as donations towards the activities of the Society.

K A Yabsley (1978-1982)

ARCHIVE MATERIAL - Message from the Headmaster

As we move into the new building, I am pleased to say that we will be offering the Old Russellian Society a dedicated archive space at the school.

I am very keen that the School should hold a complete record of events that have occurred in order that these can be referred to in perpetuity.   I would like to take this opportunity, therefore, to invite all Old Russellians to search their attics, garage, (bomb shelter?), for any memorabilia associated with the School and pass any (that are not of personal value!) to the School to enhance the archive.  The school will reimburse postage on larger items!

Julia Powell or Brian Angel will be pleased to discuss this with you and thank you in anticipation of your assistance with this important aspect of the School's heritage.

Dr John Jennings (Headmaster)
