UNDER- 15

This was a disappointing season for a team which has several talented individuals. Consistently failing to score enough runs in a 25-over match proved to be our downfall. Several different batsmen scored good individual totals, but at no time did they do so in the same game. Matt Waters took 2 wickets and scored 28 runs in the opening match, but we lost in only 8 overs to a useful batting side from Ewell Castle. Again, against City of London we set a low target of 83 runs. Despite some aggressive and effective fielding from our players, we narrowly lost.

Wilson’s set us a huge target of 191 for 7 wickets. Though George Morris batted through injury to score a useful 31 runs, we fell short of the opposition, scoring 110 for 7.   Against Sutton Grammar in our last game we made 102 for 7, with Andrew O’Mara scoring a useful half-century. In an exciting finish, with the game going to the final ball of the 25 overs, the opposition won by a single run.

UNDER-14

The Under-14 team produced a number of strong individual performances this season, despite losing their matches. The batting highlights included a 40 not out, made up almost exclusively of fours, from Oliver Morgan against City of London; a magnificent 54 not out from Anish Mahidharia against Sutton Grammar; and a very consistent batting performance from opener Suraj Bali. Our spinners provided the bowling highlights, with Ravi Patel taking five wickets and Angus McPhail six. The game against Sutton proved a most exciting finale to the season, with the outcome uncertain until the final over and decided by a margin of only six runs. Suraj Bali again led the team well.

UNDER-13

Played 5        Won 2       Lost 3

I have thoroughly enjoyed taking the U-13 cricket team this year. Their enthusiasm was tremendous (nearly 20 boys regularly attended weekly nets) and each of them has developed his individual batting and bowling skills as the season has progressed.

In our matches I have tried to give every boy the opportunity to bat and bowl. In the bowling department,  consistency and concentration have been a problem,  the boys trying to bowl too fast with six different balls per over! Impatience in batting and poor concentration have prevented higher individual scores. The last match of the season against Sutton Grammar School, however, was worth waiting for. Chasing 117 off 25 overs seemed a bridge too far (we had  never scored 100 runs or lasted 20 overs). However, a strong opening partnership between Beau McCarthy and Josh Landymore got us off to a good start  and was followed by a valuable stand between Josh and Rob Oakley. With 7 needed to win off the last over, Josh was dismissed, but  Sam Sheppard hit  the 4 runs required off the last ball to win the match!

UNDER-12

Although the past season cannot be regarded a success in terms of results, with all five completed matches ending in defeat, the Under-12 team can be proud that they gave every team a match, fielding well, bowling accurately and never being bowled out for less than 50. This was not a team of stars, although William ‘Fred’ Engel and Senna Osman, will, if they continue to work hard, develop into excellent cricketers. Dilshan De Silva led the side well, and will take many wickets as he matures physically, while Bilal Rashid will do very well if he can learn to concentrate for the duration of the match. Next year should be more successful if all of the team are willing to work on their game.
