Catering

In September 2009, The Royal Russell Catering Team were proud to move into their new purpose built department. With a larger main production kitchen, a more spacious dining area as well as a fabulous servery area, we have really been able to let our passion for food come alive. Furthermore in April 2010, we opened our Sixth Form Café, specially designed for our Sixth Form community.

The Catering Department is headed up by an experienced Catering Manager, with a team of nine Chefs led by Head Chef Steve Richards. Steve has over twenty years experience in catering, including hotel, restaurant and function work, as well as travelling the world and gaining valuable culinary experience from different countries. This experience has a major influence on his menus and his cooking style!

The Catering Department at Royal Russell is an independent In-House Catering Operation. This means that the school is free to choose its own suppliers (local where possible) and its own ethos on Catering, as opposed to having to follow a Company Policy. As a department, we believe in the importance of a healthy diet to support the pupils and staff in providing a full and rounded educational experience.

The Department caters for breakfast, lunch and tea for the boarding community as well as lunch and supper for senior and junior school day pupils. Both the boarders and the day pupils have an opportunity to express their opinions on the service we provide through the Food Committees formed for each community group. We also cater for all School functions, such as The Snow Ball, Pupil Christmas Lunch and Sports Teas.

Our menus are guided by the Healthy Eating recommendations laid out by the Government, but as an Independent School we are able to ensure that we are serving meals that pupils find appetising, with the odd ‘treat' thrown into the menu mix! Our menus are a combination of good old fashioned dishes such as lamb shepherds pie and newer foreign inspired dishes such as jerk chicken with rice and peas. All meals are cooked from good quality raw ingredients on site each day, with regular deliveries from our suppliers and careful monitoring of goods delivered.

Students can take their pick from a light lunch of soup and bread with a choice of fresh fruit, home made yoghurt, or a wide range of salads. For those wanting something a little more substantial, a full range of hot food is available including a meat dish, a non meat dish, pasta and jacket potato bar with fillings and sauces changing daily. We offer a minimum of two vegetables and fresh home made bread is served at all meals.

We are able to support pupils with a wide range of special dietary requirements and we are always pleased to meet with parents to discuss individual needs. In order to assist us in this role we take advice from specialist organisations such as The Vegetarian Society as well as The Vegan Society. We have recently linked up with a specialist food supplier, Vegetarian Express, who not only supply us with vegan and vegetarian ingredients, but also cater to our intolerance and allergy needs.
