We were delighted with the Maths results this year, with a 96 % A* to C pass rate at GCSE and 84 % of A level students attaining grades A or B.  75% of our Further Maths students achieved double A grades. This builds on our A level results from last year, for which the School was recognised by The Good Schools Guide for having the best A level Maths results for boys at an independent school in the country. Particular congratulations go to Jonathan Sengendo for securing his place at Cambridge to read Engineering – he will certainly be using and extending his maths skills. Congratulations to the students and staff who put in so much time and effort, including giving up holiday time for extra revision classes.

Events during the year included the three UK Maths Challenge national competitions, in which Royal Russell School achieved a creditable 6 gold, 11 silver and 25 bronze certificates, gold being awarded to the top  7 %.

Certificate winners were:
Bronze: Giordano Battistel, Shaquela Bryant, Paige Campbell, Natalie Photiou, Grant Donaldson, Jason Southcott, Oscar Clarke, Jennifer Moon, Jenny Coker, Paul Hann,  Nopakorn Hansanant, Chris Savory, Akmaral Bekturova, Sasha Francis, Nathtakritta Dulyakometh, Angus McPhail, Adrian Yansaneh, Josh Chen, Christopher Knight, Thomas Wilkinson, Samantha McIntyre, Ji Min Lee, Han Wu, Chawalit Wiriyawattana, Maggie Yu.

Gold: George Worth, Anthony Davies, Sirinda Hansanant, Dalit Cohen, Jason Cho, Xia Gao.

The inter-house Maths Challenge competitions are equally popular.  Pupils rotate around a series of three puzzles and  gain points for mathematical skills, team playing and logical process.   Solutions are presented to the entrants over some well-deserved juice and sandwiches.

Miss Cacace accompanied a team of two Year 8 and two Year 9 pupils to the annual Team Maths Challenge.  This year’s regional first round was hosted by Trinity School.  The team, comprising Angus McPhail, Monami Takada, Sirinda Hansanant and Amy De Peyrecave,   did well and particularly enjoyed the strenuous maths relay game.

Mr Stanley and I accompanied the Lower and Upper Sixth Double Maths students on a mathematical enrichment day at the Institute of Education, London.  Students were treated to several lectures, including ‘How Maths Is Used to Solve Crime’, ‘Maths and Games Theory’ and ‘The Magic of the Primes’.  Students and staff found it to be a very rewarding day indeed.

Once again we were pleased to host the Cambridge Maths Roadshow.  All pupils in Years 8 and 9 were able to have a great deal of hands-on mathematical fun.  It was hard to drag them away at the end of their sessions!

Mr Peter Moore has done sterling work in the Department for a number of years.  We will miss his valued support at all levels and offer him all best wishes for the future.  This year we welcome Mrs Lindsey Smith, who brings a wealth of experience to the Department.
