House System

The children in Years 3 to 6 are placed in one of four Houses, each named after a historic cathedral city – Canterbury, Durham, Exeter and York. House assemblies are organised once a month and House Captains are appointed to help select and encourage house teams and give general assistance to House Teachers.

The House system provides excellent opportunities for the development of competition in all aspects of school life. Pupils may earn credits for a piece of outstanding work, an example of initiative, helpfulness and also for participation in a wide range of activities. There is keen competition between the pupils to ensure that their House achieves as many credits as possible.

There are exciting competitions between the Houses in most sports and games, including football, hockey, netball, cross-country, swimming and cricket, culminating in the annual Athletics Sports Day in June, in which all pupils take part and which parents are invited to attend.

House Trophies are presented at the annual Prize Day in July, when the eagerly awaited announcement of the top-achieving House is made, and the House Shield awarded to the winning House Captains.
