Rob and Luke are going to Malawi in August to climb Mt Mulanje, here is their report.
Did you know that in Malawi over one million children have lost at least one parent, and the current life expectancy in Malawi is less than 40 years. So in 1999 a Malawian man (the current headmaster) took in ten orphans and started teaching them under a grass shelter. This was the start of MOET (Mangochi Orphans Education & Training).
MOET how grown since then and is now a community-based, co-educational day school for orphans and vulnerable children in the Mangochi district of Malawi by the lakeshore. It provides not only primary school education but also practical skills training in a caring environment which respects all belief systems. MOET provides free education and meals for its children so it relies entirely on donations.
In August we are going on an expedition to Malawi to help at the orphanage, we will be helping with various things, including teaching the children. Also by going out we will take any donated items to the school for example laptops, computers, uniform, and even old sports kits for the children.
The main reason to go to Malawi this year is to raise money for the school. We are going to climb Mt Mulanje the tallest mountain in Malawi. It is 9,849 ft high that's 3,000 m high! We hope to take several children from the school with us as well.
The money that we raise on mufti day will go to the orphanage and provide food, books and electricity for the orphanage. If we raise £500 that can pay for the school's electricity for 10 months or provide electricity for the area for 50 months! That's around 5 school years!
We hope you appreciate the cause and the charity thank you for reading.
Freya's Report
In May next year, my dad Kerry, will be cycling 400 kilometres across Malawi. His training started on the 12/09/11 and he’ll be doing 20 miles a day training until February. You may ask why on earth someone would want to do this? Are they crazy? Well no not really, he will be working with ActionAid and hoping to raise £4,000 for children in Malawi who have been affected by HIV and AIDS.
Francis is a boy who we have sponsored since he was a toddler. We send him pictures and letters and we get loads of replies from him. And he’s grown up so much since we started sponsoring him 5 years ago. Francis is the same age as my sisters, Ava and Elise, but their lives are very different!
In my presentation you will see a picture of Francis when he was 3 and he is now 8!
Francis has to walk for over an hour to get to school and without sponsorship he would have to get a job when he reaches 10 years old.
If we keep Francis in school he can be educated on preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS.
Why am I doing this?
ActionAid has helped so many children and adults change their lives for the better! Francis is just one of many who have been helped. I want to help my dad and give him some motivation for the 400 km bike ride he’s got next year, so we need donations!
If each person in school gives a little, we as Royal Russell School can raise a lot!
How are we going to do this?
I would like to propose that some of the monies raised can go to Mission Malawi when Royal Russell has a mufti day. This day could make a massive difference if we all wear our own clothes and give just a small amount of money towards the target, so many children really can help. And ‘even. If we manage to stop just one child from contracting HIV & AIDS it’ll be worth it!’
