Norway Music Tour - Summer 2011
The Choristers, Barbershop, Senior Orchestra and Jazz Band have returned from a most successful 6 day summer tour of Norway. During that time these 40 pupils performed to enthusiastic capacity audiences at venues across Norway; delighting them with the breadth and variety of their programmes. Repertoire ranged from the music of Bach and Handel to contemporary composers such as Karl Jenkins and John Rutter. It is notable that they achieved a standing ovation in each venue which is a tribute to the high standard of professionalism which they displayed.
Director of Music Hugh Sutton said, ‘ I am proud of the standard of musicianship achieved by all our pupils who were not only first class ambassadors for the exacting standards of Royal Russell School, but also for the United Kingdom. It is much to the credit of these young musicians that they were able to sing in Norwegian during the church Service at Avaldnes following coaching from Mr Arnfinn Tobiassen, the church organist and former teacher at Royal Russell.'
The choirs were accompanied by Mr Christopher Dowie, former Director of Music at Royal Russell, and the Orchestra was most ably conducted by Revd Stephen Padfield.
The musicians also found time to relax after their concert in Bergen Cathedral by taking a cable car trip to the mountains. Other leisure activities included bowling and an activity day at a farm reached by an enjoyable boat trip along the fjords to see the 631m Langfoss waterfall which is the highest on the west coast of Norway.
