'Romeo and Juliet' School Production - November 2011
| The Balcony |
| Our overall aim has been to include the students as much as possible in all areas of the production. In English, Year 9 have been studying Romeo & Juliet so they took part in the poster competition aided in the production side by A level Media students. Media students also filmed sound bites from auditions to rehearsals and final preparations. New students have been trained and added to the ‘technical team’. |

Perhaps the best voice is that of a reviewer, Jordan, Year 9 had this to say:
If you’re new to Shakespeare, don’t be put off by the long, old-fashioned words or the length of his plays, because it’s not difficult to follow if you pay attention. The worst thing you could possibly do is to nod off because, I promise you, you’ll be kicking yourself for it later. Year 9 was privileged enough to watch the dress rehearsal and I can honestly say that it was mind blowing.

The level of work that had gone into this performance showed during every minute of the play, and I think that was obvious to every member of the audience. Congratulations to the directors who have created something that can be appreciated by anyone and everyone.

I could spend the rest of my life writing out the “pros” of this production. The scene changes were clean and precise taking long enough to give the audience a chance to rest but not so long that they got bored. It has been made modern, but subtly enough that it does not intrude on the original plot and message of the play. The costumes were brilliant: perfectly suited to their characters; in fact so much so that they almost told their own story.

The list of “cons”, however, is almost insubstantial. The only thing I can come up with is that if you’re more of a traditional Shakespeare fan, this may not be your cup of tea, purely due to the modernization.
Amelia played a very confident and believable Nurse. Her lines were all spoken clearly and without hesitation. Sam portrayed Tybalt excellently. He really showed off Tybalt’s authority and strength. Lucy was a very regal Lady Capulet. She moved and spoke as though she truly was royalty.
Well done to all of the backstage crew – the sound, lighting and the film at the start were all superb! It wouldn’t have been a complete production without the ensemble who made the slightly less action-packed scenes interesting and entertaining. The set was simple but effective and did not intrude on the space of the stage or distract from the highly creditable performances given by all cast and ensemble members.

Overall, an extremely pleasing performance in all aspects. Congratulations to everyone who took part and very well done to the directors for creating a timeless piece of drama.
Thank you.
