Royal Russell Goes Voting - May 2011
The school Politics' Students organised a mock referendum across the Senior School to coincide with the national Referendum on AV, manning the polling station and counting the votes. The referendum was kicked off with a lunchtime debate in the library two days before the vote. Neil and Alex spoke on behalf of the NO campaign whilst Georgia, Sam and Charlotte spoke for the YES group. Having made their pitch the students had to face a range of questions with students from all years. Questions asked included whether the financial cost of change was too great and whether they thought changing the system would increase or reduce turnout at future elections.

The referendum itself took place on the same day as the national one and over 35% of the school voted either before registration or over the morning and lunchtime breaks. Outside the polling station Hannah and Bradley faithfully handed out leaflets on behalf of the No campaign whilst Sam drummed up support for the Yes vote. After school Natasha, acting as the returning officer read out the final result. 106 voted Yes whilst 137 voted No. |
