Award winning novelist for teenagers, Melvin Burgess, had pupils at Royal Russell simply enthralled yesterday when he spent the day working and talking with students in the school library.
The novelist worked with small groups of pupils, looking in particular at “plot”. He challenged pupils to examine the structure of a well-known fairy story and then rework the elements into a thoroughly modern story. The pupils responded well to the challenge and came up with many interesting and original reinterpretations. He talked about the amount of research he does for his hard-hitting novels, spent time setting various fun and interesting challenges for the students and gave them the opportunity to take part in a challenging competition.
Even lunch-time was busy when the author held a question and answer session that both pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed. The author also spent some time autographing books.
