World Book Day - March 2011

Book week and World Book Day was enjoyed by everybody in the School. Nursery celebrated Book week by acting out stories and sharing songs and rhymes with their buddies in Year 5. They also dressed up as their favourite book characters and played with their puppets.

Book week in Reception saw all the children making their own counting and picture books, learning to sort books and watching how books are made. It was also lovely to welcome Mrs King and Ms Wilson on Wednesday to read stories to us! We were busy practising a story song for our assembly!

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed acting out our poems with our puppets. The teachers were amazed by the variety of different poems that had been chosen, and the creativeness we showed in our puppets.

Year 2 enjoyed reading The Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl. They were busy learning some of his version of the Three Little Pigs, an interesting discussion about the differences between this and the traditional story ensued. They all decided that the ‘revolting' version was best! The children enjoyed a variety of activities based on the rhymes.

The Senior School Library hosted a sale of new and second-hand books in aid of Book Aid International. We raised over £100.

“Bestsellers to Blockbusters.”  To celebrate World Book Day this year, the Senior School Year 9 students – and staff! – made lists of their favourite books.  This time the choice was made a bit harder: it had to have been made into a fantastic film.  In their English classes, the students chose extracts which brought the story to life, and which they thought the Junior School pupils might like too.  Despite all the new novels on offer, it seems the classics are still the most beloved: from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Matilda’, to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. On Thursday 3rd March, a group of these students, dressed up like characters from the books and visited the Junior school to show just why these bestsellers became blockbusters!
