Year Fives Get Creative with Sebastian Ward Turner - April 2011
The artist Sebastian Ward Turner led a portraiture workshop with Year 5 this week. Showing examples of his work in oils, Sebastian described the working methods of a contemporary portrait painter and showed some snippets of film showing some other portrait artists at work.
Children in the two classes were very inspired by the presentation and showered Sebastian with questions.
Children then embarked upon a portrait drawing while this professional artist circulated round both classrooms offering suggestions and constructive criticism. Pointers such as the fact that eyes are positioned in a horizontal line across the centre of a face (rather than towards the top) and the instruction to keep looking at the subject whilst drawing rather than looking at the drawing itself helped children produce some distinctive drawings.
It is hoped that Sebastian Ward Turner will make two further visits to the school in 2012 and work with both Year 5 and Year 6. Children currently in Year 5 are eagerly awaiting their next session with Sebastian.
