'r' Issue 9
The latest issue of r – Royal Russell School’s student-led newspaper – was published this week, coinciding with the start of exam leave for Year 11 and 12 pupils.
The leavers’ special edition featured photographs and memories of students, some of whom have attended Royal Russell since the age of three. The newspaper also included a four-page feature on food, notably writing on fine dining, Spanish food, careers in the food industry, the history of pizza and food-inspired art.

School Newspaper Up For Award - April 2013
Royal Russell School’s student newspaper has reached the finals of a competition celebrating the best pupil-led magazines and newspapers in England and Wales. The half-termly newspaper – called r – was shortlisted from an initial entry of 200 schools for the Shine 2013 School Media Awards. The publication has been put through to the final stage of judging which takes place on May 21 at Stationers’ Hall in the City of London, when r journalists will find out the categories in which they have been nominated. These could include best cover, best original artwork or photography, best overall editorial content, best magazine and outstanding pupil.

Istanbul Model United Nations - April 2013
Twelve Royal Russell School students travelled to Istanbul for the very well-organised, THIMUN affiliated, Robert College MUN conference, along with students from over 80 different schools and 25 different countries.

'r' Issue 8 - March 2013

The latest edition of r – Royal Russell’s student-led newspaper – was published this week, with the focus of this issue on language. The edition includes an interview with Mrs Mawer, head of languages, who argues that ‘languages are an essential part of everybody’s lives’, while Barty questions the merits of teaching Latin. There is also writing from Hitachi First High School, Japan, who are represented every year at the Royal Russell’s October MUN conference and an account of a visit by a group of German students to the school this term. Issue 8 of r also includes a photographic montage by Cora of the Sixth Form dinner and the latest developments as the school prepares for the Vanguard Challenge in June. To read Issue 8 click here.

Spanish Exchange Trip to Santiago de Compostela - March 2013
A group of 17 Year 9 and 10 pupils learning Spanish set off to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain) this March to meet up with their Spanish exchange partners, this time in their homes.

Music Workshop with Yale University Choir - March 2013
They will be singing in the corridors for months to come at Royal Russell School after a truly electrifying, passionate, upbeat, inspiring and truly unforgettable visit from Yale University's award winning pop/rock a cappella group Out of the Blue. Pupils at our school were treated to a day of workshops and performances from the American group and all involved were amazed and inspired by the experience.

Twenty-one Royal Russell students attended the 2013 City of London one day MUN conference in March. This was a really well organised conference which provided a great opportunity for some of our less experienced delegates to attend a conference and get debating.

Swimming Success for Oludaisi - March 2013
Congratulations to Oludaisi in Year 8, on his fine performance in the DSE National Junior and Youth Championships, held in Sheffield on 2nd and 3rd March 2013. Oludaisi came first in his group in the 50m Backstroke and was awarded Gold. He was awarded Silver in the 100m Freestyle and Bronze in the 100m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle.  Oludaisi is now looking to build on his success when he competes later this year in another national competition but against swimmers older than himself.  Well done!



Year 12 Trip to the House of Lords - March 2013
Lord Ramsbotham, the former Chief Inspector of Prisons, and a prominent crossbencher kindly showed Royal Russell students around the House of Lords, organised seats for them during Question Time and then spent an hour talking about the work of the Lords and answering students’ questions.

Model United Nations Kingswood - March 2013
Thirteen Royal Russell School students attended the prestigious Kingswood School MUN conference from 1st to 3rd March. Over 30 schools representing 120 different countries were at the conference. Royal Russell delegates took a full part in the conference having five of their resolutions debated, and were rewarded with six individual commended awards and four individual highly commended awards.

Royal Russell’s student newspaper r celebrated its one-year anniversary this week with the publication of a seventh issue.
Publication and distribution in Houses coincided with Valentine’s Day, and the edition included poetic messages of affection written to and by students.

Gung Hay Fat Choy! - February 2013
Students at Royal Russell School came together to mark the lunar and Chinese New Year today. The Chinese have bid adieu to the Year of the Dragon and gracefully welcomed the Year of the Snake. The lunchtime celebration featured several musical interludes with the audience being treated to some fantastic singing and guitar playing. Plus, entertaining talks on Chinese New Year customs and traditions all presented by some of the Chinese students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12.



Battlefields Trip - February 2013
The inhumanity of the First World War - a distant and understandably unfathomable concept in the classrooms of Royal Russell - was brought to life in a visit to the killing fields of the Great War.
