The Olympic Volunteers are Ready to Go! - May 2012
The Olympic flame has been lit at the Temple of Hera, next to the historic ruins of the ancient Olympic games and the tension is rising as we await its arrival in the UK this Thursday, prior to it beginning its journey around the UK on Friday. Three of these volunteers who are simply delighted to be part of London 2012 are based at Royal Russell School and for each of them it is a chance to get involved in a once in a life time experience.
'r' School Newspaper Issue 3 Out Now - May 2012
The third issue of r – Royal Russell’s student newspaper – was published this week, ahead of being distributed in houses. The May edition of the student-written and edited newspaper is an exam special, coinciding with the start of a seven-week examination period at the school.
Mock London Mayor Elections - May 2012
Mayoral election fever peaked and not just in the centre of London it would seem. Pupils were also feeling campaign pressure as the election drew ever nearer. Timed to coincide with the real London elections, the School decided to bring the excitement of the real election to those not yet old enough to participate in the official process, by running there very own mock election.
R. Oscars Media Studies Exhibition April 2012
A packed house enjoyed the inaugural R.Oscars Awards, a night celebrating the achievements of Royal Russell’s Media students, hosted by Dilshan. The first award, Best Co-Curricular Video was won by Eden for MUN TV: The Crisis. This was followed by the prize for Year 12 Music Video.

Max's Lacrosse Success - May 2012
Max (Year 9, St Andrew's) has graduated to the England U15 Lacrosse Training camp held at Manchester University later this month. Max, who is a keen all-round sportsman, has represented the school at football, hockey, cricket and athletics, but it is in the relatively minor sport (in this country) of Lacrosse that he excels.

Geography A Level Field Trip to Exmoor - April 2012
This April, the Geography A level teaching team led an expedition to Exmoor National Park to study the River Horner. Year 12 students measured every aspect of the river from width and velocity to hydraulic radius and wetted perimeter. Unlike last year when there was a mini heat wave, the forecast was not good.

Shakespeare's Birthday Celebrations - April 2012
The Senior School celebrated Shakespeare's birthday in style. A fun quiz about the bard and his life and times got pupils in the mood. This was followed by pupils from nearly every year group presenting short scenes, monologues or songs from a wide range of his works. The highlight for many was the selection of Shakespearean insults that were traded by a couple of Year 7 boys with great gusto! The festivities ended with a chorus of “Happy Birthday” to the great man and a sharing in his birthday cake.

Following the huge success of their concert at Royal Russell School last October, award-winning Croydon singer, Nikita Bazil, and concert pianist Panos Karan, are once again sharing the stage, this time at the prestigious central London venue of the Royal College of Music on Thursday 26 April.
Jason Meets the Prime Minister - April 2012
Jason, a Year 13 student at Royal Russell School and member of the Conservative party, attended a rally at Orpington Village Hall to hear Boris Johnson speaking as part of his bid to retain his role as London Mayor. There was an unannounced guest appearance by the Prime Minister and Jason managed to meet both Boris and the Prime Minister.
Dublin MUN - April 2012
During the Easter holidays, 12 Royal Russell Students attended SAIMUN, the four day Model United Nations conference based in Dun Laoghaire near Dublin. It is a very well run International conference with over 100 delegations and this year only two schools came over from the UK.

I have enjoyed learning more about our wonderful school and in particular have enjoyed supporting a whole host of cultural, artistic and sporting events including the successful 1st XI Football side above, who have played some tremendous open football this season.
Gavin Barwell, MP Visits Our Own Politicians - March 2012
On the last day of the Easter term Gavin Barwell, the MP for Central Croydon, visited the school to discuss his new initiative Project Change: Croydon. He met with Year 12 and 13 Politics students to explain the project and to also answer political questions.The MP was keen to spread the word on the project and suggested that any students wishing to discover more they should go to the webpage: http://www.projectchangecroydon.org/
