About Philip Millward Director of Music
Philip Millward was born in Lincoln and began his musical education by serving as a Chorister at the Cathedral. It was here that he developed his particular passion for choral music. On leaving the choir he took up the organ, and gained a Sixth Form Music Scholarship to Wells Cathedral School, where he learnt the organ with Andrew Nethsingha. He also studied piano, harpsichord and composition. Philip remained in Wells for an extra year to be the organ scholar for the Cathedral choir.
After his time at Wells, Philip was awarded the organ scholarship at Christ Church Oxford, where he also read music and continued his organ studies with David Sanger. During his time in Oxford he directed the Cathedral Choir on many occasions and he ran a student choral society.
Between 1997 and 2012 Philip worked at Trent College in Derbyshire. Throughout his time there he was Head of the Chapel Music, organist and music teacher. He significantly increased the standard and repertoire of the Choir whilst in charge and took them on trips within the country and further afield. In 2003 he was appointed Director of Music at the school, and in 2008 he became a Boarding Housemaster, and since then he has been heavily involved in the pastoral life of the school.
For a number of years he was also the musical director of the Ruddington and District Choral Society, with whom he directed many performances of large scale choral works, often with orchestral accompaniment.
Philip left Trent to take up the post of Director of Music at the Royal Russell School in September 2012.
Philip is married to Shona and they have one daughter, Clara.
