Jazz Band, A Student's Account
The Royal Russell Jazz Band is one of the most creative and relaxed music ensembles at Royal Russell School. Led by internationally renowned Jazz musician, Hilary Cameron, members of the Jazz Band learn the creative skills of Jazz music including improvising and gain a great experience from playing with other musicians.
I look forward to Jazz Band practice every week, as our rehearsals are such fun and very rewarding. The comfortable, close-knit feel of the group is a great environment to experiment musically and the band always welcomes newcomers.
Jazz Band has given me the experience of playing a variety of Jazz styles, from Straight-Eights Standards to energetic Latin songs, including ‘Watermelon Man' and ‘Chameleon' by Herbie Hancock, ‘Manteca' by Dizzy Gillespie and ‘Mr. PC' by John Coltrane, to name a few of our most recently ventured pieces. Ms. Cameron has also encouraged us to play a wider range of genres that take our fancy, from heavy rock to funk, keeping our rehearsals and performances fresh and cool.
It is my final year at Royal Russell, and Jazz Band will be one of the things I will miss most about my school life. The Jazz Band has given me lots of skills and fond memories that I will take with me into the next stage of my life.
