Curriculum Sport
Sport is an integral part of life at Royal Russell School. Through a combination of well-qualified, experienced staff, excellent facilities, varied opportunities and high expectations all pupils are encouraged to reach their full potential.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7,8 and 9), pupils have a double ‘Games' period one afternoon a week and another double ‘Physical Education' period at some other time. Both these sessions last 2 x 40mins.
The focus for the ‘Games' is usually in one of the schools' major representative activities; Football, Netball, Hockey, Rounders or Cricket. Other areas of study might include; Badminton, Basketball, Tennis, Lacrosse, Handball and Rugby.
The focus in PE could be described as developing a ‘broader base' of experience. Activities may include Gymnastics (including Trampolining), Athletics, Health Related Exercise (HRE) and Swimming.
Key Stages 4 & 5
Year 10 pupils enjoy one double period of Games per week. A number of options are made available to them each half-term. These are typically centered around traditional games and choices for an active lifestyle such as aerobics.
Year 11 and above have their Games afternoon on a Wednesday. At the start of the year they each select the activity that they want to continue with for the Winter. Some of these may be off-site, but all are run by qualified, experienced staff.
All pupils are encouraged to attend extra curricular clubs and represent the school in a wide variety of sports. We run Senior Football teams, Mixed Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Badminton and Table Tennis. All have regular fixtures and enter regional tournaments.
