Football

All children receive high quality coaching during PE lessons in the Autumn Term and Football Club which runs throughout the season.

All teams are encouraged to play a passing style of football and there is great emphasis on using the game to help develop a team ethos.  Competitive matches are played against many local schools from Year 2 up to Year 6.  We aim for every child to represent the school throughout the year and there is also the eagerly contested House Football Competition which everyone enjoys.

We also enter a variety of girls football competitions and welcome girls to join our football clubs at all ages.  The Junior School has achieved great success over the past few years in Football.

The Under 11 Girls Football Team began the defence of their National Title in fine style last Friday at Ardingly College.

The Under 13 team have also now qualified for National Finals and we look forward to what could be a momentous day for the girls and the school.

Super Saturday for Royal Russell Footballers U9's

The Under 9 boys also improved on last year's runner up position at the Caterham tournament by winning it this year. Wins in the group against Elmhurst, Hazelwood and Hawthorns were followed by a convincing semi-final win against the hosts, Caterham. This put the team through to a final against last year's winners Hawthorns.
A fine goal by Evan in the final proved to be the difference between the two sides as Royal Russell were declared winners!

Year 5 Royal Russell Host Inaugural U11 Football Tournament

On Saturday, Royal Russell hosted a brand new U11 football tournament. Many schools attended the tournament and there was some exceptional football on show throughout.

Royal Russell entered an A and a B team for the tournament, with both teams performing exceptionally well. The B team gained and impressive draw against a strong KCS Wimbledon side and picked up wins against Babington House and The Roche School.

The As gained good victories against Beulah Junior, The White House and Falcons School. A draw and a loss elsewhere meant that the group was tight, but they went through to the main Cup competition. A 1-0 win against KCS Wimbledon in the semi-final was followed by another 1-0 victory in the final over Wetherby Prep to leave the boys as the first champions of their very own tournament.

Last Friday, the U11 Girls Football team travelled down to Ardingly for the regional rounds of the national ISFA 7 a-side competition. The girls had convincing wins against Ardingly and Crossfields and two narrow losses against Bede’s. These results ensured a runners up spot which came with qualification through to the National Finals at St George’s Park, the national FA training centre, on Monday June 26th. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts so far and we look forward to working hard over the coming weeks in preparation for the finals.

The B team enjoyed their first taste of competitive school football and the A team performed exceptionally well to finish third overall. Starting with a convincing 6-0 win, they then had two dramatic 0-0 draws before heading through to the Cup quarter final. A tight draw against Chinthurst saw the game go to penalties. Jo Jo and Lucas convincingly put away their penalties with Alister making two fantastic saves to send the team through to the semi-finals. A tight 1-0 defeat to Rokeby saw the team finish in a very impressive third place.

U10s Cup Semi-Final

The U10A boys football team travelled to Westbourne School for the quarter finals of the Geoff Richards Trophy.

Royal Russell dominated possession but could not find a goal for long periods of the match. In the dying seconds, Emeka found a moment of brilliance to slot the ball in the top corner and send his team through to the semi-finals of the cup with a 1-0 win.
