Hockey

The Junior School hockey programme makes full use of our first class astro-turf facilities and highly qualified coaching staff at the school.

All children begin to play in Year 1, discovering the basic skills required to play the game.  From Year 3 onwards, all sessions are based around discovery through game play and every child develops their skills in a competitive yet friendly environment.

Each year we host an U11 Girls and Boys hockey tournament which attracts some of the best schools in the area.  We enter local, regional and national tournaments throughout the hockey term.

U10 In2 Hockey Plate RUNNERS UP

The U10 girls travelled to Surbiton for the In2 Hockey competition. We were in the Plate section with 5 teams to play against. The morning started well with a 1-1 draw with Rowan.

The next match was Broomwood Hall the eventual winners and we could not hold off a strong attack. In the next 3 games the girls were determined to score some goals and they did not disappoint with three 1-0 victories. It was very tense and we were lying in 3rd pace until Rowan could not score against Streatham and Clapham!

This was just what we needed seeing us move up into 2nd place!

U9s Shine at Parkside Tournament

Our U9A Hockey Team put in a strong performance at the Parkside Tournament. Winning their group with an unbeaten run, they marched into the Final. Despite conceding no goals throughout the whole day, a ‘wonder goal’ in the final against Hoe Bridge saw us lose 0-1, coming 2nd overall.

Key Stats

•Unbeaten in the group matches
•Didn’t concede in the group matches, and only 1 goal all day
•This season the boys have scored 24 goals in 9 matches.

U11 Boys are the Kings of the draw at IAPS hockey

The U11 Boys performed admirably at the IAPS regional hockey tournament on Monday. They conceded three goals all day, qualified for the Plate Competition and fought hard until agonisingly losing on penalty shuffles in the Quarter Finals to Parkside.

All results below:

1-1 draw with Durlston Court
0-0 draw with Cumnor House, Sussex
1-0 loss to Vinehall
1-0 win against Ardingly
1-1 draw with Alleyns
0-0 draw with Lambrook

The boys have made a huge amount of progress in the last few weeks and should be immensely proud of their efforts.

U11 Hockey Tournament another great success

The annual U11 Hockey tournament was held on Saturday 27th January and proved to be another fantastic event for all involved. Both Royal Russell boys and girls teams made it to the semi-finals, with Whitgift going on to win the boys cup and Thomas’ Clapham winning the girls cup.

U10 Worth Tournament

What a fantastic afternoon of hockey for the U10 girls at the Worth tournament. Their teamwork shone through on the day securing us 4 wins in the group stages, with excellent defending, passing and tackling the final against Cumnor House was a very tense game.

We went 1 goal down however battled back to 1-1, the girls gave it 100% however Cumnor House managed to score to win the final 1-2. With Mille being selected as player of the final it was a fantastic end to a great afternoon, well done girls.

U9 Boys Finish 4th at Parkside Hockey Festival

The U9 boys, including five Year 3s, went to Parkside and finished in an impressive fourth place. In the group stages, they beat Parkside and Eagle House thanks to fantastic goals from Lorenzo Shone and Thomas Karelis. Draws against St Andrews and Ripley Court were enough to see the boys through to a 3rd/4th place play off overall. They came up against an impressive St George’s side, who ran out 2-0 winners, but the boys should be exceptionally proud of their fourth place finish. There is certainly plenty more to come from this team.

U11 Hockey Tournament

The annual Royal Russell U11 Boys and Girls Hockey Tournament was a roaring success. We were ably assisted by Addiscombe Hockey Club, who provided umpires for the event.

On the pitch, our girls team fought well in the group stage and narrowly missed out on a place in the Plate Final, losing a close encounter to James Allen’s.

The boys went one better, making the Plate Final and losing out to a last second winner from a strong Whitgift side.

St George’s Weybridge took the girls Cup title and Parkside the boys. A fun morning was enjoyed by all.

U11 Hawthorns Hockey

The U11’s travelled to Hawthorns for their annual tournament, they played 6 matches and worked hard on their skills in preparation for the IAPS tournament later in the week. With a win and a draw and some improving teamwork the girls finished in 5th.

IAPS Girl's Hockey qualifier

The girls travelled to Hurstpierpoint for the National IAPS Hockey qualifier. Their hockey teamwork, defending and marking showed great improvements and despite very close games they were unlucky not to get a win. They learnt a lot from the day and demonstrate some great skills.
