The events we had planned, but that were postponed due to Covid-19, were as follows:
1/ June CCF reunion at the RAF Club Mayfair
2/ Southbank Centre Drinks on the River June
3/ ROR June Barge Trip
4/ Queens Tea during RRS Day June (a tea party for old members of North/South/Queens) and hopefully will be rearranged for a future date.
5/ ORGS Golf was delayed from early July and a small group eventually did manage to meet up in late August with a report below
6/ OR November Reunion for 90’s leavers
7/ OR Football
We are hopeful these events will take place in 2021.
The only scheduled activity we were able to carry out was the delayed ORGS 2020.
Event organised by Adrian Edwards
The Old Russellians’ Golf Society was established in 2015 with an original membership of a dozen players. We now have a roster of over thirty players who have all played at some time or another in our Summer competition.
Each year we seem to have at least one new member and this year the society was delighted to welcome David Selby (member of staff 2006-2020) to his first game with fellow Old Russellians.
This years event was an interesting challenge as we had to organise things around all the Covid-19 restrictions. The original date was due to be in July but was postponed to the 14th August due to the golf club only just being allowed to serve basic refreshments etc.
This year we attended Woldingham Golf Club and had a great day with decent weather. Upon
arrival there was coffee and the traditional bacon roll and we had to make the most of that as there was to be no meal after the game. Everyone had to gather outside the clubhouse for the results and prizes while keeping socially distanced from each other.
Given that due to the Pandemic we had a fair few members not wishing to attend this year I am pleased to say the eventual turnout of 14 players was very pleasing.
Everyone enjoyed the day and the chance to have a chat after the game with refreshments served in disposable plastic glasses.
The eventual winner was Nigel Rocca (ex member of staff 2004-2019) with a very respectable score of 39 points playing off a handicap of 10.
Runner up was David Selby (ex member of staff 2006-2020) who was just one point adrift with 38 points and not a bad start to his first outing with ORGS.
Old Russellian Drinks on Mid-Summer Day
This year we changed the venue for the London Drinks to the Terrace bar at the South Bank Centre. Despite the evening being rather overcast, the late sun burst through lighting up the London eye in glorious sunlight. This new venue was allowed more terrace and green space for everyone to enjoy their first drink bought for them by the Old Russellian Chairman, Adrian Edwards.
About 25 former students not only met up with former class mates or CCF members but also enjoyed meeting up with much older ORs who were keen to chat about their former school experiences. The staff that attended found it interesting to see what everyone was doing now whether they were still at University or in the world of work.
DAKS/Simpson Visits Royal Russell
On Monday 24 June, Royal Russell School welcomed friend of the School DAKS/Simpson.
DAKS is a British luxury fashion house, founded in 1894 by Simeon Simpson in London. DAKS holds royal warrants granted from three members of the Royal Family, one of 15 firms to do so.
A tree will be planted in their honour as recognition for all they have done for the school.
The Old Russelian Golf Day was a great success with a great turnout. The winner was Andy Rogers who is pictured with the OR president, Adrian Edwards. Longest Drive went to Ian Windle, Closest to the pin to Nigel Rocca, runner up was Robin Parker.
A number of former students, current and retired staff met up and enjoyed an evening at The Anchor on Bankside last Friday to enjoy a drink from the Old Russellians and catch up on news.
Visit from former pupils
Last week we had a visit from Sohee (Sophie) Kim (North House 1995-98) and Sanghee Cho (Oxford House). They were at Royal Russell when Paul Knight was in charge of North House and Nick McMahon ran Oxford House.
Sohee studied Maths, Geography, Art and Business at A level and went to Surrey University to complete an MA in Business and Tourism Management. Sohee is married with a seven year old son.
Sanghee studied Maths, Physics and Business before a year at Kingston University. He then returned to Korea to complete two years of military service before returning to the UK to study International Business at Westminster University. Sanghee is married with a six year old daughter.

The golden visit to MUN in New York, the delegation standing outside the United Nations building in New York. From L-R; Ross MacDonald, Martin Hawes, Nawroz Abbany, Andrew Law, Andrew Jackson, Mr Roy Bushin, Sherry Pestonji and Russell Stevens. We naively thought we could catch a taxi wearing our Palestinian scarves… in the end we had to hide them.
