Hockey

At Royal Russell we aim to inspire a passion for hockey by blending enjoyment with competition, meaning each individual will fulfil their potential here.

We embrace sport for all so regardless of experience or ability we encourage participation throughout school life. Regularly scheduled school fixtures and annual cup competitions in each age group allow pupils to sharpen their skills in a competitive environment.

Our coaching team comprises current national league players, international coaches and local club players. Pupils can draw on this wealth of knowledge, skill and experience which ensures the delivery of high-quality training sessions and competitive values in fixtures. As mentors we aim to provide an environment that supports each individual’s wellbeing, performance and a balance between that and their academic progress.

Hockey can be accessed through their Games periods, after school clubs, weekend fixtures and lunchtimes meaning a pupil could play between 2 and 6 hours per week. Alongside that our holistic scholarship programme provides more detailed and specific training that incorporates our strength and conditioning department and video analysis. This is all targeted to allow each student to maximise their development and reach their potential.

The importance of strong community links is vital for our programme. With our coaches heavily involved in local clubs we can encourage participation outside school which in turn drives motivation within our school teams.

These links are evident within our fantastic facilities too. Our all-weather full-size floodlit AstroTurf and all weather multi use games area (MUGA) is at the heart of a local club and allows the school to host junior tournaments throughout the year.

The school is proud to have county representatives in the U13, U14 & U15 age groups as well as two individuals looking towards England Hockey Academy & Performance Centre trials. It is of upmost importance that our programme garners these links, embraces the player pathway and champions success.

We hope our passion for hockey instils a motivation within our students to engage with the sport long after they have left the school.
