Welcome to Royal Russell

Royal Russell is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, set within 110 acres of beautiful parkland on the edge of London. We are a family school, and that is something we say with pride. It shapes the way our classrooms feel, the way our boarding houses look after one another in the evenings, and the way our pupils greet each other in the corridors.

It is also written into our motto, non sibi sed omnibus, which translates as ‘not for oneself, but for all’. You will find that idea woven into the daily life of every pupil, every member of staff and every family who joins our community.

We believe each child has something distinctively brilliant about them. Our job is to help them find it, develop it and use it well. That is what we mean when we say different by design: the design is intentional, and the difference is felt by every pupil who walks through our gates.

A community where every child is known

Royal Russell is large enough to offer exceptional opportunity and small enough that no pupil is ever lost in the crowd. Our teachers know our pupils by name, and so do our coaches, our houseparents, our chaplain and our catering team. From Nursery through to Sixth Form, every child is supported by adults who notice them, encourage them and celebrate their progress.

That sense of being known sits at the heart of our pastoral care. It is the reason our pupils take risks in the classroom, try new things on the sports field, and push themselves on stage and in the boarding houses. Confidence grows when you feel safe, and Royal Russell has always been a school where it feels safe to grow.

Our values

Ambitious
We are passionate learners who pursue excellence in all that we do. Through our broad curriculum and co-curricular programme, we are ambitious for ourselves and recognise the rewards of effort, collaboration and commitment.

Open
The School’s motto is ‘Not for oneself but for all’. In our inclusive community, we believe in ourselves and celebrate the differences in each other, recognising the value of honesty, integrity and respect for everyone.

Distinctive
We value originality, authenticity and contribution to our community as a whole. We nurture pupils’ intellectual, social, cultural and moral development, so that they can confidently contribute to their world using their unique skill set.

Courageous
We emphasise that the right thing to do isn’t always the easiest thing to do and promote spiritual and moral values through Christian principles. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves and each other to do good; becoming strong global citizens.

A campus made for learning

Our 110-acre parkland campus is one of the things our pupils talk about most. There is room here to run, to think, to gather, and to find a quiet corner with a book. Within those grounds you will find a beautiful Chapel and Great Hall, a Performing Arts Centre, a state-of-the-art Health and Wellbeing Centre, modern science facilities, a well-stocked library and Sixth Form Centre, spacious dining facilities, and some of the finest sporting provision in the South East.

It is a campus that rewards exploration. Our youngest pupils head into the woodland for Forest School. Our Senior School pupils train on full-size pitches and rehearse in professional-standard performance spaces. Our boarders enjoy the calm of the parkland in the evenings and at weekends. The buildings hold our history; the grounds hold our future.

We are also wonderfully well placed. Royal Russell is just 30 minutes from Central London and conveniently located for Heathrow and Gatwick airports, giving our pupils the best of a peaceful country setting and the energy of one of the world’s great cities.

A complete educational journey

Royal Russell is one school made up of distinct stages, each designed for the pupils in it.

Our Nursery and Junior School lays the foundations for a love of learning, with small classes, specialist teachers from an early age, and a brand-new Junior School building.

In our Senior School, pupils choose from a broad GCSE curriculum and benefit from outstanding teaching, expert careers guidance and a busy co-curricular programme that stretches them in every direction.

Our Sixth Form prepares young adults for university and the world beyond, with A Level and BTEC pathways, real leadership opportunities, a dedicated Sixth Form Centre and a strong record of progression to leading universities.

Boarding is woven through it all. Our full and weekly boarders live in a delightful mix of historic and modern houses at the heart of the campus, looked after by experienced houseparents and tutors who know each child well.

Our heritage

Royal Russell School was founded in 1853 with the patronage of Queen Victoria, and our royal heritage continues today. More than 170 years on, the names above our doors have changed and our facilities have moved with the times, but our purpose has not. We exist to give a generous, well-rounded education to young people whose families value character as well as achievement.
