Chapel

The Chapel of St Christopher and the Infant Jesus stands at the heart of the School community, instantly recognisable by its tower and steeple. Built in the 1920s as a War Memorial, it bears the names of Old Russellians who lost their lives in the World Wars and remains a lasting reminder of their self-sacrifice. Acts of Remembrance take place annually in the Chapel and in the Memorial Garden.

Throughout the year, the Chapel provides a focal point for major School occasions, including the Welcome Service, Lessons and Carols, and special anniversary services. It serves as the School’s church, open daily for quiet reflection and prayer, with regular worship for boarders and weekly services for Senior pupils. Junior pupils attend twice a term, with additional services for Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas and Mothering.

The Chapel’s musical life is led by the Choristers, the Barbershop and the Choral Society, and several recitals are held there. School services are inclusive and encourage the spiritual and moral development of all pupils, inviting them to reflect, understand difference and care for others and the environment. Above all, the presence of the Chapel at the heart of the School is a statement that the School recognises the need to remind ourselves of another dimension in our lives, whether specifically religious or broadly spiritual, and offers a place for pupils and staff of all faiths, or of none, to experience peace and quiet and a special space for reflection.
