Careers Education

In addition to providing an overview of the range of careers and courses available to young people, the Careers Department offers personal support and guidance to pupils selecting their GCSE and A level options in order to maximise their future opportunities.

Careers is taught as an integral part of the Wellbeing curriculum for all pupils in Years 7 to 11 and as a distinct lesson in Year 12, aligning with the Gatsby Benchmarks and the Careers Development Institute’s Careers Development Framework.  Our Head of Careers is a registered member of the Career Development Institute and provides personal guidance to pupils and families.

The curriculum is divided into three strands:

Career Curriculum

Career Exploration

Pupils will learn how to research different career roles and industries effectively and identify the different qualification and skills pathways that will lead to the career of their choice. They will identify which additional activities, work experience, reading material and test preparation are required, as well as gain an understanding of the job application process.

Pupils will gain a good understanding of the wide range of opportunities available to them and keep up to date with Labour Market trends.

Pupils in every year group are supported by the Unifrog careers platform, which provides opportunities for psychometric testing to uncover skills and interests, a comprehensive Library of Careers and Subjects and links to opportunities with universities and employers.

Self-Development

We empower young people to plan and manage their own careers, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and to recognise the skills and qualifications they will need to develop, providing personal guidance and supported opportunities such as work experience and professional networking.

We encourage pupils to raise their aspirations, set goals, create action plans and reflect on experiences.

Career Management

We ensure that pupils are prepared for their GCSE Options, post 16 and post 18 choices and that they are aware of possible opportunities for the future. This includes choosing appropriate subjects that fit well with ability and interests and planning super curricular activities and/or work experience.

Careers Library

The Head of Careers maintains a Careers Library, which offers a wealth of resources, from university prospectuses and degree subject guides to colourful careers brochures and careers guidance aids.

All pupils are encouraged to drop into the Careers Office during school hours to utilise the available materials with the guidance of the Head of Careers.

A weekly Careers Newsletter is sent to all pupils and parents, and includes an ‘Opportunities Spotted This Week’ section giving details of super and extracurricular events, virtual work experience, and paid or unpaid/volunteering opportunities.
