Core Maths BTEC

Core Mathematics Level 3 Certificate is a practical qualification designed to help you apply maths in real-life situations you’ll encounter in further study, work and everyday life. Whether you’re analysing data or managing personal finances, the course focuses on useful, applied maths rather than abstract theory.

Unlike GCSE Maths, the Level 3 Certificate in Core Maths introduces new ideas that reflect the demands of modern study and employment, including data interpretation, financial modelling and logical estimation. It’s an ideal option if you want to keep developing your mathematical confidence without committing to a full A-Level.

The minimum requirement to take Core Maths will be grade 5 at GCSE.

Course Content

Core Maths is split into two papers:

Paper 1

3.1 – Analysis of Data
3.2 – Maths of Personal Finance
3.3 – Estimation

Assessed:

written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
60 marks
scientific calculator or graphics calculator allowed (see section 5.9 for more information on calculators)

Questions:

formulae sheet available
no optional questions

Paper 2

What’s assessed:

3.4 – Critical analysis of given data and models
3.5 – The normal distribution
3.6 – Probabilities and estimation
3.7 – Correlation and regression

Pupils will be expected to draw on the mathematical content of paper 1. Pupils will be expected to develop and demonstrate confidence and competence in the understanding and application of mathematical modelling in the solution of problems related to the use of statistical techniques.

At Royal Russell we follow the AQA Level 3 course for Core Maths. (One year course)

Enrichment and Support

We offer a weekly Maths Clinic on a Friday between 4:00–5:00 pm as well as a programme of co-curricular revision classes during holidays and during Study Leave.

Looking Further Ahead

The Core Maths qualification carries the same UCAS points as an AS Level and is widely recognised by universities and employers. Completing the Level 3 Certificate Core Maths shows that you can confidently handle data, interpret numerical information and apply logical thinking across different subjects.
