Politics A Level

In a world that is increasingly unstable and a global order that is subject to radical change, understanding politics can help us to make sense of the chaos that currently surrounds us and explore different ideas on how we can build a better future.

If you enjoy lively debates and are prepared to defend your ideas whilst challenging the ideas of others, then Politics is for you. In Year 12, students study UK Politics and UK Government, alongside Political Ideas. In Year 13, our focus shifts to the Government and Politics of the USA.

Course Content

Politics lessons feature a wide variety of teaching and learning activities, including individual and group research projects and presentations, media analysis, and whole class debates and discussions. We follow the Edexcel A Level Politics course. All components are examined by two-hour exam papers at the end of the course. The three components of the course are:

Component 1 – UK Politics and Core Political Ideas
Component 2 – UK Government and Non-core Political Ideas
Component 3 – Government and Politics of the USA

Entry Requirements

A strong interest in current affairs and an ability to use different media sources to keep up to date with major news stories, alongside a willingness to engage in debate and discussion, are key to success in Politics. Students who have enjoyed studying one of more Humanities subjects at GCSE- Geography, History or Religious Studies- will have a good chance of success in Politics.

Looking Further Ahead

Recently, a number of students have studied Law, International Relations and Politics at university, however, the skills learnt will be useful for a wide range of courses.
