Ali is Vice Chair of the Finance and Estates Committee.
He is Professor and Director of the Institute of Iranian Studies, University of St Andrews. Ali is professor of Iranian history and founding director of the Institute for Iranian Studies at the University of St Andrews, as well as Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2016. He is the author of numerous books, including The Politics of Nationalism in Modern Iran.
Ali is an Old Russellian.
